Nespelem, with a population around 187 reported in 2000, is located 80 miles northwest of Spokane. It was, at one time, a sub-agency of the Coliville Reservation. The name Nespelem is unique in the US. It is an Indian word meaning "large meadow beside a stream" or "a beautiful valley between the hills".
