The city of Karbala (Kerbala) is in central Iraq. It is the capital of Karbala Governorate, and is the place of the death of Husain bin Ali in the year 680 AD. Shi'a Muslims consider Karbala to be one of their holiest cities after Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and Najaf. The city is best known as the location of the Battle of Karbala.
