Palmer is a tiny town (population about 200) in Pocahontas County. The grain elevator is the largest business. The town is sprouting new businesses in its recycled school building.
Palmer is best known for its champion basketball teams from the 1980's. Since 1990 Palmer has joined with a neighboring town to form the Pomeroy-Palmer school district, which continues to have great success in basketball as well as the newer "sport" of electrathon car racing.
The Wiegert Prairie Farmstead, a preserved turn-of-the-century farm operated jointly by the county historical society and conservation board, is located near Palmer, and hosts an annual Farmfest each August and schoolchildren's visits each May. Kalsow State Prairie Preserve, Cooper's Cove Park, and many wildlife areas are also nearby.
