Notwithstanding growth in the County, the towns and villages of Loudoun County were mostly of a rural character a decade ago. The towns in the western section have remained the little hamlets surrounded by farmlands; those in the eastern section have grown to become major suburban areas to house the growing county population and business sector.

Ashburn has been among those towns in eastern Loudoun County that have seen phenomenal growth in the last decade of the 1990's. Formerly called Farmwell, Ashburn had only 85 families listed on the 1990 census, but major development resulting in the twin communities of Ashburn Farms and Ashburn Village have resulted in a population explosion of over 500%.

Ashburn is located along Rt 7 several miles east of Leesburg. It is directly adjacent to Goose Creek, and has the Potomac River to the north. Dulles Airport is directly south.
