Classical

Classical music has come to refer to a canon, or a body of works accepted over time as worthy of study and performance. Originally, music created for the European aristocracy at court and in church, as opposed to ballads and comic songs performed by minstrels for common folk. By the 18th Century, the style was associated with more or less standardized instrumentation and accepted principles of counterpoint as exemplified by the composers Mozart and Haydn. Classical style includes this so-called Classical Era but also the preceding Baroque period of Bach and Handel and the subsequent Romanticism of Beethoven and Schubert. Other subgenres include 20th century post-Romanticism and 12-tone music, and some writers would also include early music from the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. The style includes vocal music such as opera, lieder and oratorio as well as instrumental music. Although classical music is usually intended to be performed as written, it also includes semi-improvisational experimental, electronic and aleatoric music often associated with universities.

Chamber Ensembles

For small groups, typically no more than seven or eight performers, each playing a different instrument and each on a separate part. The string quartet is a notable exception, using two violins. Classical vocal trios and quartets are also listed here. Chamber orchestras use more performers, and may include pairs of like instruments.

Groups larger than eight should be submitted to the Chamber Orchestras category. Site descriptions may include location (city and country), instrumentation, repertoire examples, and names of members.

Choirs

According to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, a choir is a body of singers with more than one voice to a part. Classical choirs perform both as the focus of a composition and as an adjunct to an instrumental ensemble such a symphony orchestra.

Concert Bands and Wind Ensembles

It's hard to classify the music performed by concert/symphonic bands and wind ensembles. However, many would consider these to be 'classical' organizations for lack of a better term. All groups - professional, military, amateur - are welcome here.

Please submit only European sites concerned with concert bands and large wind ensembles. All such groups (apart from those detailed below) are welcome in this category, be they professional or amateur, open to all or with membership restricted by audition.

Web sites from the non-English speaking world should be available in the English language. If this is not the case for a substantial part of the site, then submission should be made to the appropriate language category within:

Classical contemporary music accepts several definitions. Let's say it's music written by living composers for living performers and living audience.

Magazines about Classical music in general. For specific genres (e.g. opera) or instruments (e.g. organ) please refer to the appropriate category in Arts: Music: Styles: Classical.

Please submit only sites that cover a wide range of aspects of classical music. Instrument-specific (e.g. piano) and genre-specific (e.g. opera) publications should be submitted to the relevant category. Do not use for promotion or celebration of individual musicians or ensembles (e.g. ''The Luciano Pavorotti Newsletter on-line'' should be sent to the appropriate opera category). If the site you are submitting contains merely subscription information on a publication, please state so in your description.

Orchestras of all sorts which perform classical repertoire are welcome here. Professional, amateur, semi-pro, chamber orchestras, full orchestras, you name it.

For groups whose members share an interest in classical music.

Performers

Performers included here are instrumentalists who have devoted their careers mainly to classical music and the teaching of classical music in a conservatory or music school setting. They should have a classical training and perform individually as soloists or with such music organizations as symphonic orchestras, chamber orchestras, and also with smaller ensembles such as duos, trios, quartets, quintets, etc.

Please only submit those performers with a classical interest and/or background.
