This category is for information about Open Source -- the movement, the philosophy, the people, and of course, to some extent, the products. (Probably most of the actual software packages will be in Computers/Software somewhere, but there should be cross links where appropriate.) Official definition of open source
Very few sites will be listed at this level
  • Sites dealing with specific Open Source software projects should instead be suggested to an appropriate sub-category of Computers: Open Source: Software.
  • Sites related to Linux (including specific distributions, such as Ubuntu, Debian, or RHEL) should instead be suggested to an appropriate sub-category of Computers: Software: Operating Systems: Linux.
  • Sites for consultants and companies, even if they focus on OSS solutions, do not belong here. Start looking for a more suitable category in either Computers: Consultants or Computers: Companies.
  • For other sites, please look to see if there is a suitable sub-category before suggesting your site here.
Suggesting inappropriate sites here will only delay their review and potential listing by editors.
The sites here are for people who are interested in the Open Source/Free Software movement.
Directories of open-source and/or free software.
Actual software listings are what this category is about. However, your site does not have to be limited to this scope in its entirety if the directory section is big enough and high quality.
This category is for those seeking employees or employment in the Free/Open-Source Software field, doing work that is more than mere toil. This can include programming, system administration, doing webpages, secretarial, and more. Even the sky is not the limit.
Web sites and Newswires that provide open source news which is in some way unique. Sites that just display a collection of news feeds from other sites and don't offer any unique content of their own will not be included.
Open source-Any software whose code is available for users to look at and modify freely. Linux is the best-known example; others include Apache, the dominant software for servers that dish out corporate web pages. [taken from a Google search for "open source"]

Category is for web sites and newswires that provide open source news which is in some way unique. Sites that just display a collection of news feeds from other sites and don''t offer any unique content of their own will not be included.

Please note that this does not include sites which carry uncopyrightable material, such as recipes, or content which has fallen into the public domain.
Sites related to Organizations involved in producing or promoting open-source software.
Hosting services for open-source projects. This category focuses on open source project hosting only - commercial hosting services will not be listed - wrong submissions will cause a delay in getting your site listed.

This category is only for sites that specialize in hosting open-source projects. This category is not for general web-hosting services.

Even if you are a commercial host that happens to use open-source operating systems and web servers as part of your infrastructure, you don''t belong here. Repeat: Commercial web hosting providers are not listed here. Sites for web-hosting companies should instead be suggested to the appropriate sub-category of Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Hosting.

Inappropriate site suggestions made to this category may be deleted without review. At the very least, suggesting sites to the wrong category will delay their review and potential listing by editors.

This category is used mainly to collect links to other relevant categories in Computers/Software and places like that. Individual packages usually fit better in one of the Software categories than here. (The exception would be software for "doing things the open source way", whatever that might mean in practice. And even then maybe not.)
Please indicate (in round brackets) the programming language, and [in square brackets] the operating system that the code is known to work on.
