The Renault 4 was the successor to the rear engined Renault 4CV. The 4 was given an all new body and became the first production hatchback, however the engine and gearbox were carried over from the 4CV resulting in the gearbox being placed ahead of the engine at the front of the car. The Renault 4 was in production between 1962 and 1992.
