Please DO NOT submit your site to the top level of Recreation/Outdoors unless your site is about all aspects of outdoor recreation.

If your site is about one activity, please find the category devoted to it and submit your site there. For example, submit fishing sites to the most appropriate subcategory in Recreation/Outdoors/Fishing.

Any site offering information only of interest to people within a local area, please submit your site to that location''s Recreation and Sports subcategory in Regional.

Please submit your travel sites to the proper subcategory in Recreation/Travel and NOT to Recreation/Outdoors. Thank you.

Camping

Camping is most commonly defined as an outdoor recreational activity involving living temporarily in the outdoors, usually in a tent or recreational vehicle with the purpose of getting away from civilization and enjoying nature. Camping describes a range of activities from survivalist campers who set off with little more than their boots to those who arrive in large recreational vehicles equipped with their own electricity, plumbing, and patio furniture.

Please submit only sites dealing with camping, as defined below. Look for the most appropriate sub-category and submit your site there.

The title should be the official name of the site. If the site is for a business, please give the official name of the business as the title.

When describing the site, include pertinent information such as location and services offered. Do NOT use any sales hype such as "Best campground in Ohio!"

Sites dealing with resident or day camps (also known as "summer camps") should be sent to the appropriate section of Recreation/Camps.

Sites for businesses that rent cabins should be sent to the appropriate location in Regional.

Sites for trailer parks (also known as mobile home parks, residential caravan parks, or park home estates) should be sent to the appropriate location in Regional.

Caving

Caving is the exploration, study, conservation and enjoyment of caves and other underground structures. Speleology, caving, potholing, spelunking and urban speleology are all common terms that refer to these activities. Caving is a potentially dangerous extreme sport. It is highly recommended that you contact a local organisation to commence your participation in this fascinating recreation. "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time."

Before submitting a site to this section please check whether it would be more suited to one of the sub-categories.

This category is only intended to cover sites containing mainly English content, other languages should be submitted to the relevant language category listed in the third section of the caving page.

Directories

For directories, web portals, and other sites that consist primarily of links to other resources that cover more than one outdoor activity. A site covering a single outdoor activity will be listed in its appropriate activity subcategory.

Commercial resources, such as guiding services, tours, reservation agencies, and retailers will not be listed in this category. Please submit to a more appropriate category.

Sites covering a specific geographic area are better submitted to Regional area.

Equipment

This category will list websites which discuss equipment for recreational outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. An example would be a website of an experienced camper that lists and discusses the appropriate equipment needed for a successful camping trip.

Submissions will not be accepted at this level. Gear reviews belong in Consumer Information. Manufacturers belong in the Business category Outdoor Recreation. All sites that meet the guidelines for listing in Shopping should be submitted to the Shopping category Outdoors. Local retail stores should be submitted to Regional. If your site deals with a particular type of equipment or activity, please submit to the most specific category possible.

Fishing

There are many sub-categories for Bass related sites. Please check these and submit to the most appropriate. Selecting the correct category can expedite acceptance.

Please do not submit a commercial site to this category, it will not be added to the directory.

Geocaching

Geocaching is an activity where an individual or team uses a global positioning system (GPS) to locate different treasures, otherwise known as caches. Caches are usually placed in wooded area of parks, or areas that are off the beaten path. Seekers then use the latitude and longitude of the item locate the cache. In most cases caches are some type of container that you leave an item in, and then take and item out of. Caches also frequently have logs to sign and/or cameras to document those who found it.

This category is strictly for general geocaching sites. This includes but is not limited to: information on geocaching, lists of caches, variations of geocaching hunts, and other geocaching specific topics that do not fall into one of the sub-categories.

Sites that deal strictly with GPS should be submitted to Science/Earth_Sciences/Geomatics/GPS_-_Global_Positioning_System/ or one of its sub-categories.

Guides and Outfitters

This category is for companies that offer guided tours or trips involving more than one outdoor recreation activity. These trips can offer either fixed or customized itineraries, however they must require active participation. Companies that rent equipment for self-guided trips may also be listed.

If your company specializes in a particular outdoor activity, such as hunting, fishing, or climbing, please submit to the appropriate activity category.

Tours that only involve sightseeing or picture taking should be submitted to the most appropriate Regional or Travel category.

Please submit to the most specific subcategory possible.

Hiking

This category, and its subcategories, are for informational, and personal sites which are entirely, or primarily about hiking.

For sites to be listed in this category, the majority of its content must be about hiking.

Sites selling hiking products online will not be listed anywhere in Hiking. Please submit such sites to a suitable category in Recreation/Outdoors/Equipment.

Regular tour companies with a fixed itinerary will not be listed anywhere in Hiking. Please submit such sites to the proper subcategory of Recreation/Travel/Reservations/Regional Tours or to Recreation/Travel/Reservations/Adventure and Sports/Biking and Hiking.

Guides and outfitters, which are services where the itinerary is set by the client, will be listed in the Guides and Outfitters subcategory, only if they are devoted exclusively, or primarily to hiking.

Guides, and outfitters who provide services to multiple activities should submit their sites to a proper subcategory of Recreation/Outdoors/Guides and Outfitters. Such sites will not be listed in Hiking.

Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a outdoor recreational activity which combines collecting, puzzle-solving, and treasure hunting. Briefly, letterboxing enthusiasts hide and hunt weatherproof containers in remote or scenic places. Each container holds a guestbook, a rubber stamp and stamp pad. The planter of the letterbox distributes clues to its location; solution of these clues may require a combination of skills such as mapreading, orienteering, and puzzle-solving. Letterboxers carry their own stamp book and personal stamp when hunting for hidden boxes. Upon finding a letterbox, they will impress their own book using the found stamp, and leave their own stamping or personalization in the letterbox guestbook. Letterboxing has its roots in Dartmoor, England, in 1854.

Metal detecting is the activity of searching for, and the recovery of, metal objects such as coins, jewelry, artifacts or other items with an electronic device (a metal detector). The term is generally associated with the act of treasure hunting, which implies that the metal objects have value.

Please submit only sites dealing with metal detecting, which would include personal hobbyist web sites, full-featured detecting web sites (with forums, chats, links, and information of general interest to the hobbyist), clubs and organizations.

Do not submit listings for manufacturers, retailers, and online sales of detectors and/or accessories. Please submit them to: Shopping: Recreation and Hobbies: Outdoors: Metal_Detecting.

Sites relating to outdoors publications, magazines, e-magazines, newspapers, e-newspapers. Includes websites that publish outdoor related articles, news stories, and book excerpts.

Sites submitted to this category may refer to paper publications, be web based publications, or both. Sites should have original content and a discernable publishing frequency (single issue as in a book; or monthly, weekly, daily, etc. as in magazines, books, journals, and newspapers).

This category includes listings with information about the national parks, game reserves and wilderness areas of the world. Sites specific to a single country or continent should be submitted to their appropriate sub-categories.
