Shida Kartli is an administrative region of Georgia. The capital is Gori and the region is divided in 6 districts: Gori, Kaspi, Kareli, Java, Khashuri, and Tskhinvali. The northern part of the region (the districts Tskhinvali and Java) forms the self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia with Tskhinvali as its capital. With the exception of Russia, no country in the world has recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
