Basra (also called Al-Basrah or Basorah) is the capital of Basra Province, Iraq, and had an estimated population of 3,800,200 as of 2009. Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it is incapable of deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr. The city is the historic location of Sumer, the home of Sinbad the Sailor, and a proposed location of the Garden of Eden. It also played an important role in early Islamic history, being built in 636 CE, or 14 AH. It is Iraq's second largest and most populous city after Baghdad.

Duhok (also spelled Dohuk, Dehok or Dahok) is a city in northern Iraq and is the capital of Dahuk Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan. It has about 241,000 inhabitants, mostly consisting of Kurds and Assyrians. According to some sources, the name "Dohuk" comes from Kurmanji Kurdish meaning "Du gog". Circled by mountains along the Tigris river, Dahuk has a growing tourist industry. Dahuk's population grew extremely since the 1990s as the rural population moved to the cities, mostly consisting of Kurds though. The University of Dohuk, founded in 1992, is a renowned center for teaching and research in Dohuk.

Irbil (also written Arbil or Erbil) is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is the third-largest city in Iraq after Baghdad and Mosul. The city lies eighty kilometres (fifty miles) east of Mosul. The city is the capital of Kurdistan Autonomous Region and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Khanaqin (also spelt Khanakin and Xanaqin) is a city in eastern Iraq, south of Kurdish regions. It is located in the Diyala Governorate, near the Iranian border on a tributary of the Diyala River. Khanaqin is the administrative capital of the Khanaqin District. This District contains several cities such as As-Sadiyah and Jalula as well as hundreds of villages. Khanaqin is divided into two parts by the Alwand River, this river has played a significant role in land cultivation and in establishment of a strong rural society in the area. The river is considered by the people of Khanaqin as a symbol for their unity and Kurdish identity.

Kirkuk (also spelled Karkuk or Kerkuk), is the capital of Kirkuk Governorate. It is located 250 kilometres (156 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad. The Kirkuk region lies among the Pir Magrun (Gudrun) to the north-east, the Zab River and the Tigris River to the west, the Hamrin Mountains to the south, and the Sirwan (Diyala) River to the south-east. It stands on the site of the ancient Assyrian capital of Arrapha, which sits near the Khasa River on the ruins of a 5,000-year-old settlement (Kirkuk Citadel.) Arrapha reached great importance under the Assyrians in the 10th and 11th centuries BC. Mosul is capital of the Ninawa Governorate, some 400 km (250 miles) northwest of Baghdad. The original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has now grown to encompass substantial areas on both banks, with five bridges linking the two sides. Although for many years it was considered to be a Kurdish city, the majority of its population is now Arab and it does not form part of the area controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government. It is Iraq's second largest city after Baghdad. The fabric Muslin, long manufactured here, is named after this city. Another historically important product of the area is Mosul marble. In 1987, the city's population was 664,221 people; the 2002 population estimate was 1,740,000, and by 2008 was estimated to be 1,800,000. The city is a historic center for the Nestorian Christianity of the Assyrians, containing the tombs of several Old Testament prophets such as Jonah and Nahum.

Sulaimany (also spelt Sulaimaniyah and Silemani) is a city in the east of Iraqi Kurdistan. It is situated in the northeast of Iraq, and is the capital of As Sulaymaniyah Governorate. Sulaimany is surrounded by the Azmar Range (1700m), Goizja Range (1525m) and the Qaiwan Range in the north east, Baranan Mountain (1373m) in the south and the Tasluje Hills in the west. The plain of Sharazor lies to the east stretching up to 45km in length and 15 km in width. The city is 853m above sea level, and has a semi-arid climate which is very hot at summer and very cold at winter. Sulaymany served as the historic capital of the Kurdish principality of Baban from 1784 to 1850. The modern city of Sulaimany was founded in 1784 by the Kurdish prince Ibrahim Pashay Baban who named it after his father Sulaiman Pasha. Because it was founded as the capital of a powerful Kurdish principality, Sulaimany has developed into a large city with a population of about 759,508 people. It is the cultural centre of the Sorani-speaking Kurds and an important economic centre for Kurdistan.
