Located at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers, Wichita is the largest city in the state. It is a busy rail and highway junction, as well as being a major aircraft manufacturing center. Approximately one-fifth of the state's population live there. Local attractions include many museums, a world-class zoo and botanical gardens, wildlife and Native American centers. Wichita was founded in 1864 as a trading post on the site of a village of the Wichita Indians, and it owes its early development to the Texas cattle trade along the Chisholm Trail.
