The town of Bourne is considered to be the gateway to Cape Cod, with the Cape Cod Canal bisecting the community. Bourne is actually comprised of nine villages: Bourne Village, Bournedale, Buzzards Bay, Cataumet, Gray Gables, Monument Beach, Pocasset, Sagamore and Sagamore Beach.

Bourne was incorporated in 1884 and has a total area of 52.82 square miles, 40.90 square miles of which is land.
