West Boylston, Massachusetts
Located in central Massachusetts, West Boylston was a mill town in the 19th Century, producing cotton blankets and woolens. The Nashua River was utilized by at least a dozen mills in the valley, mostly in what is now the Oakdale section of town.
During the 20th century, West Boylston was forced to rebuild itself when the Metropolitan District Commission decreed in the late 1800s that parts of the town would have to be taken for a reservoir for Boston and the rest of eastern Massachusetts. Over ten years was spent moving people out of the valley and demolishing the town. While a few structures were moved, none remained in their original location except for the Baptist Church (now called the Old Stone Church).
No longer the industrial mill town it once was, West Boylston has grown in population and renewed vitality into a lovely residential community enhanced by the beauty of the tree-bordered Wachusett Reservoir.
