Earthenware is a common ceramic material, which is used extensively for pottery tableware and decorative objects. Types of earthenware: Creamware, Delftware, Faience, Tin-glazed pottery, Victorian majolica, Raku, Terra cotta. Pottery (i.e. made from clay) which has not been fired to the point of vitrification and is therefore slightly porous after the first firing. It is made waterproof by the application of slip (a liquid clay mixture applied before firing) before the second firing or the application of a tin or clear glaze. For both practical and decorative reasons, earthenware is usually glazed.

Stoneware is a category of clay and a type of ceramic distinguished primarily by its firing and maturation temperature (from about 1200°C to 1315 °C). It is usually coloured grey or brownish because of impurities in the clay used for its manufacture, and is normally glazed". Pottery (i.e. made from clay) which has been fired at a higher temperature than earthenware. The temperature is high enough to partially vitrify the materials and make the ware impervious to liquids even when unglazed.
