The benefits of these treatments are to provide treated water at a reasonable cost. However there may be problems with the treatments in terms of unknown long term health effects. These long term health costs need to be wieghed against alternative water treatments which may have less health risks.

Chlorination is a way to disinfect water but it has its own problems at times. Category addresses the pros and cons of this method.
