Apologetics (apologetics): (1) systematic argumentative discourse in defense (as of a doctrine); (2) a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity. ~1999 by Merriam-Webster, Inc. -- Christianity is worth thinking about. The word "apologetics" comes from the Greek word "apologia", which means, roughly, "a verbal defense, a speech in defense." Thus, the famous defense which Socrates gave of himself before the people of Athens is recorded in one of Plato's dialogues called "The Apology." The word "apologia" occurs in the Greek New Testament in the following passages: Acts 22:1 & 25:16; 1 Corinthians 9:3; 2 Corinthians 7:11; Philippians 1:7, 16; 2 Timothy 4:16; 1 Peter 3:15. Generally, apologetics is that discipline which seeks to provide a rational defense of the truth of a given system of belief. People who practice apologetics are called apologists or apologetes. Systems of belief as diverse as Christianity, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, and atheism can all have their own versions of apologetics. Christian apologetics, then, is that branch of Christian theology which seeks to provide a rational defense of the truth of the Christian faith. This category contains sites that present the Christian faith using philosophical technique (apologetics) through an article or group of articles. Sites listed in this section have a broad focus in the articles and essays presented (sites with a single subject focus would be listed under more subject specific subcategories under Christian Apologetics).
Sites that focus on a specific topic should be submitted to the category for that topic rather than here, even if the information presented is mostly in the form of articles or essays. Examples of possible topics within the Apologetics category are /Tips_and_Tactics, /Counter-Cult, and /Biblical_Reliability.
As the Bible today is the primary source of the Christian doctrines, its reliability is an important topic for those wishing to defend the faith. The sites in this category uphold the reliability and trustworthiness of the Bible, whether from the traditional belief that it is inerrant and inspired by God or from a more liberal perspective.
If your site argues that the King James Version is the only true Word of God in English, submit it to Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Christianity/Bible/References_and_Tools/Textual_Studies.
The counter-cult effort is an attempt to protect or convert people from dangerous or controlling religious organizations, unorthodox or heretical sects, new splinter religions, or other groups viewed as cults. Sites listed here approach this effort from a Christian perspective. Please note that the listing of any specific religious group in this category does not imply that the editors of the Open Directory Project are characterizing this group as a "cult." Rather, this category contains sites which take the perspective that said religious groups are cults, regardless of any editor's opinion on the groups involved.
Please submit non-Christian sites to Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Opposing_Views/Cults.
This category is for sites about programs offering education in the defense of the Christian faith. Schools, online or correspondence courses, or workshops in apologetics are listed here. Less formal help for would-be apologists can be found in Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Christianity/Apologetics/Tips_and_Tactics.
This category is for sites that examine the teachings of non-Christian religions or of other Christian groups from a specific Christian perspective.
If your site examines a religion or sect from the perspective of its being a cult, please submit it to Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Christianity/Apologetics/Counter-cult instead.

If your site does not take a Christian perspective, please submit it to the appropriate subcategory in Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Opposing_Views
