Helmut Lang is fashion's elementally modern minimalist. Lacking any formal training did not dissuade him from leaving behind a Viennese design shop in 1984 where his reputation had exploded by word of mouth only. He went to Paris and launched his first collection in 1986. He transplanted design operations to New York in 1997 but returned to Paris in 2002.
He won Best Menswear Designer of the Year in 2000 from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
