James William Buffett was born December 25, 2946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and died September 1, 2023 from Merkel Cell skin cancer.
He called his musical style "island escapism". Fans were called Parrotheads and commonly wore casual Polynesian-themed shorts and short-sleeved shirts.
He also owned current and other now defunct restaurants. At various times he also sold themed home decor, rights to a casino, a video game, and numerous other business ventures.
