A member of the landed gentry, English composer and poet Sir William Leighton (c. 1560/65-c. 1617/20) compiled eight consort and partsongs of his own with those of Bull, Byrd, Gibbons, and others into The Teares and Lamentations of a Sorrowful Soule in 1614, while in prison for debt.
