Modern period composer Gerard Schurmann has an international background. He was born in the former Dutch East Indies to a Dutch father and a Hungarian mother. The music of the Indonesian gamelon and the pentatonic scale mixed with the music of his piano-playing mother. Much of his early life was spent in England, and he is also influenced by composer Alan Rawsthorne. In 1981, he moved to the United States.
