As its name suggests, a fretless guitar does not have frets (the metal strips across the finger board traditionally used to facilitate accurate pitch and clear tone). Most instruments are modifications of factory made traditionally "fretted" guitars. However, there are also professional builders specialising in fretless guitars. Fretless bass guitars are much more common than fretless 6 string guitars.
