Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a dissociative anaesthetic used in many cough syrups and several other over the counter cough preparations because it also has antitussive actions. At doses higher than ordinarily used for cough suppression, it is a very powerful psychedelic drug. DXM is a morphine derivative that acts as a psychedelic by a psychopharmacological mechanism similar to ketamine and PCP.
