The name "Älvdalen" literally means "the river valley". Apart from the main town which is also called Älvdalen, Älvdalen Municipality also includes Idre, Evertsberg and Särna among other towns and villages.

Älvdalen is known for its dialect, "Älvdalska" which by some linguists is classified as its own language rather than a dialect of Swedish, and which is studied extensively.
