Originally called Phillipstown, after Major Phillips purchased the territory from the Native American Indian sagamores, Fluellen, Sunday, and Hobinowell in 1670. Territory passed to Peleg Sanford in 1696, by Mrs. Phillips. Town was settled in 1740, renamed Sanford, and incorporated by 1768.
