The town of York, located in the western part of York County, is the seat of the county of the same name. The area was home to the Catawba Indians when Scotch-Irish settlers arrived in the mid-1700s to establish farms. By 1780 two Revolutionary War battles were fought in this area, Williamson's Plantation and Kings Mountain. Today York's rich heritage and architectural features can be seen by visiting the Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic Congress Street houses specialty shops, theaters and restaurants. Small town hospitality makes York a charming place to visit.
