The Boyds Collection Ltd. began as an antiques shop in the home of Gary M. Lowenthal and his partner, now wife, Justina (Tina) Unger. A group of 100% Merino Wool Bears from China was added in 1984, and at that time Gary (G.M.) designed his own 12" fully jointed wool bear and also turned to resin sculpting. The success of the Merino Wool Bears caused him to license the rights to a design that incorporated poseable characteristics with a plush body. From that idea, the company was formed.
