The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the primary organ of the United Nations charged with encouraging sustainable development, promoting higher standards of living, fostering respect for individual rights, and supporting technical cooperation among states. The Council commissions policy analysis projects, initiates discussions on international social and economic law, counsels with numerous non-governmental organization, and loosely coordinates the work of most autonomous UN agencies.
