The Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia covers the north-western part of Georgia and has Sukhumi as its capital. A short war in 1992-1993 between Russian backed Abkhaz secessionists and Georgia, resulted in the exodus of ethnic Georgians from the region. Abkhazia self-proclaimed its independence from Georgia, but this has not been recognized by any country in the world other than Russia. Only Zemo Abkhazia (Azhara community) had remained under de-facto control of the Georgian government in Tbilisi until the August 2008 war with Russia.
