Birds

Around 150 million years ago, flying dinosaurs called Pterosaurs began to change (evolve) and develop feathers. This is where scientists believe Birds, as we know them, got their start. Over thousands and thousands of years, there have been thousands and thousands of bird types. Many have become extinct. Others have evolved into one of the 9,000 species of birds that now live on our planet. Birds have learned to live almost everywhere on Earth. From freezing arctic areas to tropical islands and everywhere in between, there are native birds and birds that just come for a visit. Around the world, many of these native birds are endangered. Changes like global warming, pollution, and more humans building more buildings, are destroying the places where they live and feed.

All sites submitted to this category must be designed for use by kids and teens, ages 3 to 18, and provide information on or about Birds.

Websites designed for parents or teachers, or to sell products or services, will not be accepted.

Conservation

For sites about efforts to protect animals in the wild, or return them to their natural habitat, or assist breeding programs, or improve their health and welfare in some way.

Fish

The fish portion of the marine life category is the biggest. Please don't submit sites about fish in general UNLESS your site is about both freshwater and saltwater fish. Sites that can be broken down further (in otherwords are more specific and not general) will be handled accordingly.

Invertebrates

This category lists pages and sites that tell about invertebrates, animals that do not have a backbone. It includes sites about insects, worms, spiders, and mollusks.

Please submit sites about sea anemones here; see category description for a brief summary of these invertebrates.

Mammals

The mammals category houses sites about all mammals that exist, including marine mammals. Marine mammals should not be listed in the Marine Life category. There are a total of 4,060 mammals all together, living species. There are some defining characteristics that make a mammal a mammal. 1) Mammary glands are what makes a mammal a mammal. It is responsible for the process of lactation, or the production of milk. This helps mothers feed their young. 2) The presence of hair or fur for the purpose of insulation is also a defining characteristic. It helps maintain temperature.

Marine life is most synonymous with marine biology, which by definition is "The study of plant and animal life in the world's oceans, rivers and lakes." The marine life category focuses on both the flora and fauna of freshwater and saltwater ecosystems alike that would be of interest to kids.

This category list the sites of organizations which exist to help young people preserve, manage, or interact with animals.

Zoos

This category contains non-commercial sites, of interest to kids and teens, about zoos, zoo animals, and visiting zoos. Some of the zoos may be 'virtual' zoos that young people can visit only online. Many are from real zoos around the world.

All sites submitted to this category must be designed for use by kids / teens and provide information on or about zoos.

Sites for Virtual Zoos should be suggested to the appropriate subcategory.
